The Enugu State Police Command has ordered an investigation into separate disruptions of political meetings involving members of the Peoples Democratic Party and Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Premium Times reported Monday that police said they had not received prior requests for security coverage for the meetings but deployed personnel after receiving information about the incidents.
One reported incident involved an NDC mobilisation meeting at Obuoffia Ward in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where gunfire reportedly caused participants to flee and left at least one person injured. The circumstances and identities of those responsible remain matters for investigation.
The investigation carries wider significance ahead of the 2027 elections. Political disagreement does not extinguish constitutional protections for peaceful assembly and association. Identifying and prosecuting anyone responsible for politically motivated violence would therefore serve both criminal justice and electoral integrity.
