Four residents have been killed, seven injured and four others abducted after suspected armed bandits attacked Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to The Guardian Nigeria, the attackers invaded the community on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, and opened fire on residents, forcing many to flee for safety.
The Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, reportedly confirmed the incident, saying the attackers stormed the community and shot at residents.
Eleven Residents Shot
The village head of Gorau, Alhaji Aliyu Magaji Na-Batsami, said 11 residents were shot during the attack.
Four reportedly died at the scene, while the remaining seven were taken to a hospital for treatment. Four other residents were abducted and taken to an undisclosed location.
The deceased were identified in separate reports as Bashar Sani, Ila Malam Makeri, Isa Ibrahim and Ali Aminu.
Attackers Allegedly Target Relief Funds
Na-Batsami alleged that the assailants moved from house to house in search of the ₦1 million relief payments reportedly provided to families who lost relatives in the recent Gorau boat accident.
He claimed that the attackers particularly targeted bereaved households expected to have received the government’s financial assistance. The alleged motive has not been independently established by security authorities.
The village head said security operatives arrived in four vehicles and pursued the attackers, preventing what could have resulted in a higher casualty figure.
Fresh Tragedy Hits Gorau
The attack occurred days after a boat carrying residents of Gorau capsized, reportedly killing 65 passengers, including women and children.
The Sokoto State Government subsequently announced financial assistance and food supplies for the bereaved families.
The successive incidents have deepened grief and insecurity in the community, where many residents depend on farming, fishing and transportation for their livelihoods.
Families of the abducted residents are awaiting information about their whereabouts, while the injured victims continue to receive medical treatment.
Residents have called for increased security deployment and sustained operations to protect Gorau and other vulnerable communities across Goronyo Local Government Area.

I can go to court on that same day. My lawyers are on ground,” he said. Advertisement Otse also stood by his broader claim that security agencies were contributing to the persistence of insecurity across the country. He accused the police, military, immigration and customs authorities of having knowledge of the factors sustaining kidnapping, banditry and terrorism, while questioning why the problems had continued despite significant government spending on security. “It is the police people that aid insecurity. It is the military men that benefit from insecurity. That’s why it can never stop,” Otse alleged. He added, “How much is your budget to battle insecurity? How much is your budget?
