Lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has petitioned the British, American, Canadian, Russian and Israeli embassies in Nigeria, as well as the European Union and Amnesty International, over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu.
According to Sahara Reporters, the petition alleges that Kanu is being held in prolonged solitary confinement by the Department of State Services (DSS) and calls for international diplomatic intervention.
The six-page petition also revisits allegations surrounding Kanu’s arrest in Kenya and subsequent transfer to Nigeria in June 2021, claiming he was abducted, tortured and brought before the Federal High Court, Abuja, without access to his legal team.
Ejiofor further alleged that Kanu, who is a British citizen, has been denied adequate medical care despite deteriorating health and that his international lawyer, Bruce Fein, was repeatedly refused access to him despite an existing court order permitting visits on designated days.

The petition also claimed that more than 300 IPOB members are being detained at the DSS headquarters without access to their families or legal representatives.
According to Sahara Reporters, the legal team urged the international community to intensify diplomatic engagement with the Nigerian government to secure Kanu’s unconditional release.
The petition further alleged that Kanu has been denied the freedom to practise his Jewish faith while in detention and claimed he is being subjected to psychological pressure and inhumane treatment.
It also accused Nigerian authorities of violating international treaties through Kanu’s alleged extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria and argued that he remains entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence, as he has not been convicted of any offence.
At the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the Department of State Services or the Federal Government of Nigeria to the fresh allegations contained in the petition.

The allegations contained in the petition represent the position of Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team and remain subject to judicial determination in the ongoing court proceedings.
