Recent remarks by Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya SAN concerning the controversies surrounding the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association have stirred thoughtful reflection within the legal community.
In a profession where integrity and accountability remain central values, her decision to openly acknowledge the concerns raised and offer an explanation deserves commendation.
Leadership is not only measured by achievements but also by the courage to accept responsibility when issues arise. The willingness to step forward, clarify circumstances and acknowledge lessons learned reflects humility and strength of character.
By explaining that she acted on NEC resolutions, while also recognising the concerns expressed by members of the Bar, Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya SAN has demonstrated a quality that distinguishes her as a responsible and transparent leader.

The events surrounding the 2024 conference generated strong reactions from several branches and members of the Bar. In moments such as this, silence or defensiveness can easily prevail.
However, choosing openness helps rebuild confidence and assures members that their concerns matter. It also reinforces the culture of accountability that the legal profession consistently advocates in society.
The Bar, as a community of learned colleagues, thrives when its leaders embody the principles it stands for – honesty, responsibility and respect for the collective voice of its members.
By openly reflecting on the situation and acknowledging the lessons drawn from it, the Learned Silk has taken a step that promotes dialogue and institutional growth and that is worthy of commendation, not villification.
Ultimately, leadership is not about avoiding criticism but about confronting it with sincerity and learning from it. Her statement offers a reminder that owning one’s actions is not a weakness but a mark of true leadership.

The profession grows stronger when those entrusted with responsibility demonstrate the courage to speak openly and the humility to learn. In this regard, her gesture stands as a laudable example for others in positions of leadership within the Bar to emulate.
