The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing rising insecurity and the increasing use of vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass in the commission of crimes across the country.
The decision was disclosed on Monday in an official statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who clarified that enforcement had only been temporarily suspended and not restrained by any court order.
Enforcement Resumes January 2, 2026
According to the police, full enforcement of the tinted glass permit law will resume nationwide on January 2, 2026, pending the final determination of the matter currently before the courts.
Hundeyin explained that the renewed enforcement is a security-driven measure aimed at curbing criminal activities such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, which have reportedly been facilitated by vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.

No Court Order Stopping Enforcement
The police spokesperson stressed that contrary to public perception, no court has barred the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the tinted glass law. He noted that the earlier suspension of enforcement was a voluntary administrative decision by the police to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation without undue pressure.
“It is important to clarify that at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles,” Hundeyin stated.
He added that the suspension was guided by considerations of public convenience, transparency, and responsible policing, but recent security developments have made renewed enforcement inevitable.
Criminal Exploitation of Policy Gap
The police disclosed that intelligence reports and operational findings revealed a disturbing increase in crimes committed with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. According to the Force, criminal elements have exploited the enforcement gap to conceal identities and evade detection during operations.
“These vehicles have been used to facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent offences,” the statement noted.

In light of this trend, the police said the decision to resume enforcement was both urgent and necessary to protect lives and property nationwide.
Assurance of Professionalism
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and in strict compliance with extant laws.
The IGP reiterated the Force’s commitment to balancing security imperatives with civil liberties, while working collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance public safety and uphold the rule of law.
Advisory to Motorists
Motorists who require tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles fully comply with legal requirements before the January 2, 2026 enforcement date.
The Nigeria Police Force urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies as part of collective efforts to address insecurity and promote safer communities across the country.
