Hope Behind Bars Africa, in collaboration with the Citizens’ Liberties Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has successfully secured the release of seven #EndBadGovernance protesters who had been unjustly detained in Kano, Legalinkz.com reports.
This initiative was spearheaded by the organisation alongside Aminu Mohammed Gabari, the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the NBA Uggogo Branch.
The body reported that over 870 protesters, including minors, were arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano, with many of them facing serious charges such as terrorism and treasonable felonies. The protesters, advocating for better governance and accountability, had been held without trial since August.
Out of the seven protesters recently released, six were discharged, while one was convicted with the option of a fine, which was paid.
Hope Behind Bars Africa, represented by Legal Counsel Samuel Olukade Esq., met with the Chief Registrar of the Kano State Judiciary to discuss the health and welfare of incarcerated protesters and request a reevaluation of the stringent bail terms set for their alleged offences.
The organisation, dedicated to preserving civil liberties, set up a toll-free line for peaceful protesters unjustly detained to seek pro bono legal support. Through these efforts, the organisation has facilitated the release of several protesters across Nigeria, highlighting the burdens placed on the legal system and the government’s approach to managing protests.
Hope Behind Bars Africa reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, securing the release of unlawfully detained individuals, and pushing for reforms within Nigeria’s criminal justice system in collaboration with the NBA and other stakeholders.
