Iranian authorities have executed a man, Mehran Bahramian, after convicting him of involvement in a deadly attack on security personnel during the nationwide protests of 2022.

According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s news outlet, Bahramian was among a group that opened fire on a vehicle carrying security officials in the city of Semirom, Isfahan Province, killing officer Mohsen Rezaei and injuring others.

The incident occurred on December 31, 2022, at the height of the nationwide protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurd detained for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.

Bahramian was charged with “moharebeh”, waging war against God, for the shooting and for inciting attacks on government personnel and facilities. His death sentence, delivered by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan, was upheld by the Supreme Court and carried out early Saturday morning.

The judiciary described Bahramian as a “thug.” His execution adds to the growing number of protest-related death sentences carried out since 2022. In June, authorities hanged Abbas Kurkuri for killing seven people during the same unrest.

Hundreds of people, including security officers, were killed during the protests, and thousands were arrested. Rights groups note that Iran continues to execute more people annually than any country except China.
