Call for Branch Resolutions on the Remuneration Order Enforcement

LegalLinkz

Dear Branch Chairmen,

The Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order 2023 sets out clear provisions for the minimum fees chargeable by lawyers in Nigeria. Its enforcement is central to addressing the long-standing challenge of poor remuneration and undervaluation of legal services in our profession.

The NBA Remuneration Committee has been working tirelessly to ensure that the Remuneration Order is not just a policy on paper but a reality actively implemented within all Branches of the NBA. The NBA released Implementation Guidelines for the Remuneration Order, wherein NBA Branches were empowered to develop context-specific enforcement models tailored to their local realities, provided such models are adopted at a duly convened general meeting and the resolution is submitted to the Remuneration Committee at the National Secretariat.

Against this background, the Committee hereby calls on all NBA Branches to forward their respective Branch Resolutions on the Enforcement of the Remuneration Order 2023 on or before 30th September 2025. Branches yet to take a resolution on the Remuneration Order are encouraged to do so within this period and forward same accordingly. This step is necessary to enable the Committee to commence a series of Town Hall Meetings on the Enforcement of the Remuneration Order, scheduled to begin in October 2025.

At the Town Hall sessions, discussions will focus on practical and policy issues surrounding enforcement, including but not limited to:

  • Strategies for ensuring compliance and effective enforcement of the Remuneration Order across board.
  • Stakeholders concerns regarding the implementation and its effect on both senior and junior practitioners.
  • Developing a fair and level playing ground for lawyers across different branches.
  • Advisory and guidance on best practices for interpreting and applying the Order.
  • Mechanisms for resolving disputes or complaints arising from enforcement.
  • The role of Branch leadership in sensitization, monitoring, and compliance.

We kindly request that all Resolutions be forwarded to the NBA Remuneration Committee Programme Officer at remuneration@nigerianbar.org.ng on or before the stipulated deadline.

For any questions or clarifications, kindly reach out via WhatsApp only at: 0803 388 8791.

Your cooperation and timely compliance will ensure that our collective efforts towards a sustainable and equitable remuneration regime for legal practitioners in Nigeria are achieved.

With sincere regards,
