Abuja, Nigeria — As online travel and hotel reservation services gain traction among Nigerian professionals, lawyers, and families nationwide, stakeholders are calling for urgent legislative action to protect consumers from fraud and enhance trust in digital platforms.
A new policy brief prepared by Benson Agu, released on August 14, 2025, recommends seven key measures to strengthen the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s hospitality e-commerce sector. The brief highlights common risks such as fraudulent listings, opaque cancellation terms, payment scams, and data breaches, which have eroded consumer confidence in online bookings.
The proposed reforms include standardised cancellation and refund rules, stronger consumer protection under the FCCPA, cybersecurity compliance audits, mandatory data breach notifications, and the creation of a government-supervised Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) system.
It also suggests the establishment of a Hospitality E-Commerce Registry to license booking platforms and enforce accountability through a government trust badge.

This intervention comes at a time when platforms like Crestvillas are promoting seamless digital booking solutions, offering discounted flights, premium hotel deals, and smooth booking processes to Nigerian travellers.
With Crestvillas positioning itself as a “Verified, Trusted, Reliable” service for professionals and families nationwide, industry observers believe stronger legislative backing could boost consumer confidence and stimulate growth in domestic tourism.
“The goal is to make Nigeria’s digital hospitality market safer while setting a regional benchmark for consumer protection,” the brief stated, urging the National Assembly Committees on Tourism, ICT, and Consumer Protection to act swiftly.
If adopted, the proposed measures could not only curb fraud and cybercrime but also drive tourism revenues and position Nigeria as a leader in digital consumer protection across Africa.
