The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has strongly refuted allegations made by Omoyele Sowore, claiming that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is illegal.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, described these assertions as baseless and misleading, emphasizing that they aim to undermine the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

IGP Egbetokun’s Appointment is Lawful and Valid
Adejobi clarified that IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is legally sound and firmly rooted in the provisions of PART III, Section 7(6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended). This section explicitly states:
“The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.”
Additionally, the appointment was duly ratified by the Police Council and validated through a formal confirmation letter from the Presidency.
According to Adejobi, this confirms the IGP’s tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027, as stipulated by the provisions of Section 8A of the executive bill amending the Police Act.
The amendment aims to ensure stability and continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, enabling the IGP to implement long-term strategies for enhancing national security and public safety.
Public Awareness and Warning Against Disinformation
The Nigeria Police highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding the legality of IGP Egbetokun’s status as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police. ACP Adejobi stated that Sowore’s allegations are unfounded attempts to erode public trust and create confusion about the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
“Dissemination of inaccurate information about the IGP’s standing has the potential to compromise the nation’s security framework and hinder efforts to ensure peace and order,” Adejobi said.
Call for Objectivity and National Security Focus
The NPF cautioned individuals and groups against spreading false narratives that could mislead the public and jeopardize national security.
Citizens are urged to engage in constructive and objective discussions that align with the shared mission of safeguarding lives and property, rather than indulging in disinformation that undermines the achievements of the police force.
The statement concluded by reiterating the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety and fostering trust among Nigerians.
