Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has rejected the bail conditions imposed by the Nigeria Police Force, choosing instead to remain in custody until what he describes as “the joke is over.”

Sowore’s decision comes after he honoured an invitation by the police for questioning over a viral video exposing alleged extortion by police officers on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Access Road in Lagos.

Police Investigation and Sowore’s Response

Sowore revealed that the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Federal Intelligence Department (FID), Dasuki Galandachi, had instructed his personnel to grant him bail pending the conclusion of the investigation. However, Sowore insisted that he would not accept bail conditions that compromise his innocence, dignity, and integrity.

In his words, “If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court, even then I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated. It is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the @PoliceNG hierarchy.”

Background of the Case

The controversy stems from a video Sowore recorded, exposing police officers allegedly extorting motorists on the airport road in Lagos. The video went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and highlighting systemic corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore’s criticism of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, whom he described as an “illegal IG” due to his extended tenure, has further escalated tensions. Sowore maintains that Egbetokun’s continued stay in office is unlawful, as he is due for retirement.

Sowore’s Preparedness for Legal Battle

After completing what the police termed an “interview,” Sowore expressed his readiness to face any legal consequences. He noted that the police failed to provide specific details about the alleged crime, stating only that it occurred “along the airport road.”

Sowore also raised concerns about being taken to Lagos for a “kangaroo trial,” vowing to continue his fight for justice. He stated, “I maintain that we are entering a promising year, and our fight for justice will persist. #RevolutionNow.”

Omoyele Sowore’s refusal to accept unreasonable bail conditions underscores his commitment to fighting systemic corruption and injustice in Nigeria. His stand against the Nigeria Police Force has reignited conversations about police accountability and the need for reforms. As the case unfolds, Sowore’s resilience continues to inspire calls for transparency and justice in the country.
