Police Officer Shoots Ex-Council Chairman in Bauchi

A former chairman of Ningi Local Government Area in Bauchi State, Danlami Alhassan, was reportedly assaulted and shot by a police officer affiliated with the 12th Zonal Headquarters of the Nigeria Police.

The incident occurred near the construction site of a flyover in the Wunti area of Bauchi City.

Alhassan narrated that the ordeal began when a motorcyclist, later identified as a police officer, signaled for him to stop without providing a valid reason. Concerned for his safety, he ignored the signal and continued driving.

The officer pursued him and later struck him on the head with a teargas canister, leaving him severely injured. The impact also caused a fire inside Alhassan’s vehicle.

The ex-council chairman explained that he slowed down in a populated area, where the officer blocked his car and used the weapon. Local residents who recognized Alhassan helped extinguish the flames engulfing his car and assisted him.

In the officer’s haste to flee, he left behind a bag containing items linked to the Nigeria Police Force, including a cold-weather jacket, teargas canisters, and an identification card. These items were handed over to the GRA Police Station in Bauchi.

Alhassan received treatment at the Teaching Hospital and has since been discharged. Speaking on the incident, he called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice, adding that his vehicle remains at the police station as evidence.
