NBA Tackles Police Brutality Against Legal Practitioners

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, today Tuesday, 7th January 2025, hosted members of the NBA National Litigation Committee at the NBA House, Abuja, where he was briefed on their recent activities aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of lawyers across Nigeria.

A significant update from the meeting was the legal action initiated by the NBA at the Federal High Court against the Nigerian Police on behalf of Mr. Ernest Chukwuemeka Okpaga.

Inibehe Effiong Raises Alarm Over Police Harassment, Torture, and Extortion

Mr. Okpaga, a legal practitioner, was unlawfully detained and assaulted by officers of the Nigerian Police Force at the National Cyber Crime Centre in Abuja. Mazi Osigwe condemned the incident, describing it as an attack on the entire legal profession.

He reassured the Committee of the NBA’s unwavering determination to ensure justice is served in the matter.

Commending the Committee for their professionalism, dedication, and proactive response, the NBA President stated, “The commitment demonstrated by the National Litigation Committee in addressing critical issues affecting lawyers is a testament to the strength and integrity of our Association.

The discussions also centered on strategies to prevent similar violations against lawyers in the future. These include strengthening collaborations with law enforcement agencies, instituting preventive mechanisms, and creating awareness on the rights of lawyers.
