The Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration has officially submitted extradition requests to Finnish authorities for Simon Ekpa, a prominent pro-Biafran agitator.
General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, confirmed this development during Channels Television’s 2024 Year-In-Review program on December 31, 2024. Speaking on Ekpa’s arrest, General Musa stated, “Legal action will be taken accordingly.
I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested. The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to the Finnish Government, so I’m confident the right steps will be taken.”
The extradition request is part of Nigeria’s efforts to address Ekpa’s alleged role in inciting unrest, promoting terrorism, and advocating for violent secessionist activities. General Musa revealed that all necessary legal and procedural documents have been submitted to Finland for review.
Ekpa was apprehended by Finnish authorities in November 2024 alongside four others on suspicion of terror-related offenses, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. Following his arrest, the Lahti District Court in Finland ordered his detention, citing evidence of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent in Nigeria.
The separatist leader, known for leveraging social media platforms to propagate secessionist ideologies, has been accused of fueling unrest in southeastern Nigeria. Authorities allege that his activities have significantly contributed to violent incidents in the region.
This extradition request underscores Nigeria’s resolve to address security threats and hold accountable those allegedly instigating violence and instability within its borders. The Federal Government now awaits Finland’s response to the request.
Further updates are expected as the extradition process unfolds.
