NBA Launches 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), through its Human Rights Institute, will host 16 days of activism against sexual and gender-based violence as well as other human rights abuses, under the theme, “All Human Beings Are Born Free and Equal in Dignity and Rights.” The activities will begin on November 25, 2024, and conclude on December 10, 2024.

The NBA Human Rights Committee will carry out the following activities:

  1. Official Visitations: The committee will visit key stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police, the Controller General of Correctional Services, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Minister of Women Affairs, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, the FCT Minister, UNICEF, UNODC, RoLAC, NAPTIP, NHRC, and the Nigerian Immigration Service. Official letters will be sent in advance to schedule these visits.
  2. Nationwide Branch Observances: All NBA branches across the 36 states of Nigeria are expected to meticulously observe this 16-day activism initiative. On December 9, 2024, there will be a unified road walk to the National Assembly, with participants wearing custom T-shirts and face caps to show solidarity.
  3. Branch Vice Chairmen Coordination: Vice Chairmen from each NBA branch will lead their branch’s activities, ensuring that the impact of Human Rights Week is felt statewide. They will arrange visits to state Commissioners of Police, Attorneys General, Correctional Facilities, and Divisional Police Offices. Branches that are able to fund the participation of their Vice Chairmen are encouraged to attend the grand finale in Abuja on December 10, 2024.
  4. Grand Finale: The closing event will take place at the NBA Secretariat in Abuja, featuring lectures delivered by human rights activists and refreshments for participants.
