The Nigerian Police have arraigned Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje.
This follows a recent altercation between Alex Ikwechegh and a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja’s Maitama area, during which Ikwechegh allegedly assaulted the driver.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arraignment of Alex Ikwechegh on his X handle, pledging further details on the ongoing legal proceedings.
The incident, which gained widespread attention through a viral video on social media, purportedly shows Ikwechegh slapping and verbally abusing Abuwatseya for requesting that he approach the vehicle to collect a package.
The footage captures the lawmaker allegedly threatening the driver and claiming his position would shield him from any legal consequences.
The video also reportedly shows Ikwechegh tearing the driver’s clothes, damaging his phone, and refusing to pay for the delivery service. He allegedly issued additional threats, declaring that he could make the driver “disappear” without repercussion, even if the case reached the Inspector-General of Police.
The arraignment has sparked discussions on the limits of parliamentary immunity, public accountability, and the importance of upholding the rule of law for public officials. Further updates on this case are expected.
