The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South Federal Constituency, following an alleged assault on a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The arrest was confirmed by the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, who stated that Ikwechegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station. The incident stems from a report filed by Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver who claimed he was physically assaulted during a dispute over a package delivery to Ikwechegh.
According to a statement released by the FCT Police Command on Monday, initial investigations revealed that Abuwatseya and Ikwechegh disagreed over the method of delivering the package, which then escalated into a physical altercation.
The statement highlighted Ikwechegh’s alleged dismissive attitude towards law enforcement. After reportedly slapping the driver, he remarked, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating disregard for police authority.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The FCT Police Command emphasised its commitment to an impartial inquiry and assured that appropriate legal action would be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation.
