Court Summons Wigwe’s Estate.

The Lagos High Court’s Probate Registry has issued a summons to Christian Chukwuka Wigwe, compelling him to appear within eight days to address a legal dispute involving the estate of the late Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Bank. Christian, who claims to be Herbert’s cousin, is challenging the provisions of the deceased banker’s will and the distribution of his assets.

The court has directed Christian to present his case in person or through legal representation, as detailed in the summons issued in Probate Form 7. He is expected to declare his interest in the estate or provide reasons for opposing the probate process, which aims to validate Herbert Wigwe’s will.

This legal challenge highlights the growing family tensions over the management of Herbert Wigwe’s estate, a significant portfolio, given his stature in Nigeria’s banking industry. Christian Wigwe has previously contested the probate proceedings, even though he may not hold a direct claim to the assets. He has filed a summons seeking further court directives regarding the distribution of the estate.

The dispute is further complicated by allegations Christian made in court documents dated October 7, 2024. He accused Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Herbert’s former business partner and co-founder of Access Bank, of assuming control over Herbert’s assets and the guardianship of his children without adhering to the deceased’s wishes. Christian claims Aig-Imoukhuede’s actions are contrary to Herbert Wigwe’s expressed instructions in his will.

The relationship between Aig-Imoukhuede and Herbert Wigwe was long-standing, with both having served as Executive Directors at GTBank before acquiring Access Bank and transforming it into a major financial institution across Africa. Herbert Wigwe became Group CEO in 2010, after Aigboje’s departure.

Additionally, reports suggest that Herbert Wigwe’s parents have also lodged a caveat at the Probate Registry, contesting the terms of the will. This move is reportedly supported by Christian Wigwe through an affidavit, though the family has denied any involvement in a legal dispute over the late banker’s estate. In a statement issued by Emeka Wigwe on behalf of the family, they refuted claims of seeking any percentage of Herbert Wigwe’s assets, maintaining that they had not initiated or supported any such proceedings.

The ongoing legal case continues to unravel, as the court awaits Christian Wigwe’s response to the summons, which could significantly affect the resolution of the contested estate.
