Distinguished Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this press briefing heralding the commencement of the 2025 NBA Bwari Branch Law Week.

This year’s theme, “Lawyers as Agents of Change: Navigating Judicial Reforms, Economic Policies, and Contemporary Issues,”

highlights the vital role lawyers must play not only in interpreting the law but also in driving institutional change and addressing the challenges facing our society.

Recent developments within the Nigerian judiciary have raised serious concerns regarding integrity, transparency, and public confidence.

The recent sanctions imposed on several judges and justices for professional misconduct are particularly worrisome and threaten the ability of the judiciary to deliver impartial justice.

Moreover, the economic situation in Nigeria has reached a critical point, with rising living costs and declining purchasing power contributing to widespread hardship and disillusionment.

Unfortunately, those making policy decisions appear more focused on personal gain than on genuine governance and economic progress.

Compounding these issues is the declining public perception of our legal profession. Lawyers are increasingly seen as enablers of poor governance. We must confront and change this narrative, reinforcing our commitment to integrity and justice.

In light of these concerns, the 2025 Law Week will run from May 16 to May 21, 2025, The event will feature keynote speeches, high-level panel discussions, workshops, and community-focused initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue on judicial reform, access to justice, enforcement of judgments, youth empowerment, and the evolving responsibilities of the legal profession in nation-building.

Building on last year’s theme, “Strengthening the Foundation of Justice,” we are poised to tackle critical issues at the intersection of law, governance, and public policy.

As the fastest-growing branch in one of the fastest-growing regions of the Federal Capital Territory, we remain committed to innovative legal leadership and community impact.

In line with our commitment, we are excited to announce a Prison Decongestion Programme in collaboration with T-Pumpy Concept Limited.

This initiative will involve a visit to the Suleja Correctional Facility during Law Week, where we will pay fines for selected inmates sentenced to fines not exceeding N100,000.

This project represents a significant step towards promoting access to justice and upholding the fundamental rights of citizens.

We extend a warm invitation to members of the legal profession, policymakers, development partners, civil society, and the general public to participate in this year’s Law Week.

Together, let us reimagine and reform the future of our legal system in the interest of justice, equity, and national progress.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

MR. PAUL BABATUNDE DAUDU, SAN

Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Bwari Branch
