THE HONOUR OF SILK, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF JUSTICE

A Congratulatory Message from Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye to the 68 Newly Conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 68 distinguished legal practitioners conferred with the esteemed rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Your elevation is a significant personal achievement and a proud occasion for the Nigerian legal profession. It recognises years of intellectual discipline, professional dedication and the sustained pursuit of excellence. I celebrate you and the families, mentors and colleagues whose sacrifices and support have contributed to this remarkable milestone.

The letters “SAN” carry substantial prestige. They also carry the expectations of a nation that looks to its foremost legal minds for leadership in the defence of justice, constitutional order and human dignity.

The true distinction of silk will be seen in the causes you advance, the principles you uphold and the lives your work helps to protect.

At a time when Nigerians seek stronger institutions and greater accountability, your elevation assumes particular significance. Our democracy needs advocates who can speak with clarity, act with independence and insist that public power remains subject to law.

The courtroom is one of the places where the promises of our Constitution must acquire practical meaning. There, liberty must receive protection, authority must answer legitimate questions, and every citizen must have confidence that justice is attainable.

I therefore encourage you to bring the full weight of your learning and experience to the defence of the rule of law. Uphold the independence of the judiciary. Defend due process. Let neither political influence nor social standing diminish your commitment to fairness.

Remember especially those whose voices struggle to be heard: the citizen confronting an abuse of power, the vulnerable person seeking protection, and the individual whose freedom depends on diligent and courageous representation. Their confidence in justice is strengthened when distinguished advocates make room for their concerns.

Your new standing also offers an opportunity to shape the future of the profession. Mentor younger lawyers generously. Encourage rigorous thought, ethical conduct and independent judgment. Help build a Bar whose authority rests on competence and whose influence is sustained by public trust.

To each of the 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria, I offer my sincere felicitations. May this honour deepen your resolve, broaden your contribution and bring lasting fulfilment to your professional journey.

May you wear the silk with dignity, exercise its privileges with wisdom and fulfil its responsibilities with courage.

Congratulations, and may your service to justice bring enduring honour to Nigeria.
