FANI-KAYODE REJECTS BLUE SILK TITLE AS LEGAL RANK CONTROVERSY DEEPENS

The controversy surrounding the conferment of the Senior Counsel of Nigeria (SCN) designation by the Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has taken a fresh turn following Femi Fani-Kayode’s rejection of the title.

Fani-Kayode, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, reportedly received the appointment alongside four other individuals at the society’s 2026 Annual General Conference held in Abuja on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The other reported recipients were Seyi Tinubu, Olufunmilayo Osifuye, Ihudiebube Chukwudi and Alabi Adigun.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, November 6, through his Special Assistant on Media, Lizzy Okoji, Fani-Kayode clarified that he neither authorised nor approved the acceptance of the designation.

He explained that he had sent a representative to attend the event following an invitation from the society, but the representative’s acceptance of the title was an administrative misjudgment that did not reflect his personal position.

Fani-Kayode also questioned the legal and professional implications of the designation, particularly its relationship with the statutory framework governing the Nigerian legal profession and established judicial pronouncements on professional ranks.

He subsequently urged the public to disregard any representation suggesting that he had accepted or endorsed the title.

THE CONTROVERSY BEHIND BLUE SILK

The Senior Counsel of Nigeria designation, popularly referred to as Blue Silk, has generated considerable debate within the Nigerian legal profession.

The Nigerian Law Society has defended the initiative as professional recognition for qualifying legal practitioners, particularly those whose contributions extend beyond conventional litigation practice.

However, the Nigerian Bar Association and the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee have previously raised objections to the designation, questioning its legal standing within Nigeria’s established framework for professional recognition.

The LPPC, the statutory body that awards the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), warned lawyers against using the Blue Silk designation.

The dispute has also featured court proceedings concerning the authority of professional associations and the statutory framework governing legal practitioners.

A FRESH TEST FOR PROFESSIONAL REGULATION

Fani-Kayode’s decision to publicly reject the designation adds a new dimension to an already contentious debate.

Beyond the individuals involved, the development raises important questions about professional recognition, the authority of legal associations, the regulation of legal practitioners and the distinction between institutional honours and legally recognised professional ranks.

For the Nigerian legal community, the central issue remains whether professional recognition introduced by an association can operate independently of the statutory framework governing the legal profession.

LegalLinkz will continue to monitor developments surrounding the controversy and its implications for professional regulation in Nigeria.
