Newspaper advertisements celebrating newly conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria have drawn attention to the relationship between professional recognition, third-party congratulations and the rules governing legal publicity.
The issue emerged immediately after the October 12 Supreme Court ceremony admitting 68 lawyers into the Inner Bar.
TheNigeriaLawyer reported that two full-page congratulatory advertisements appeared in the October 13 edition of ThisDay.
One celebrated Soibi Ovia, SAN, and was signed by her husband and children. The other congratulated Mustapha Olayinka Ajenifuja, SAN, and was signed by Olasunkanmi Owoyemi.
The publication expressly stated that it had no evidence establishing that either beneficiary commissioned, authorised or paid for the advertisements. It also said it had not independently verified the specific provisions cited in reports of restrictions on conferment-related publicity.
Those qualifications are central to the story. A congratulatory publication by a third party does not, by itself, establish misconduct by the lawyer being celebrated.
The development nevertheless presents an important question for professional regulators: how should applicable publicity standards operate when a family member, friend or other supporter publishes a message recognising an elevation?
The report did not announce a disciplinary finding against either lawyer. Any assessment would require the governing instruments and the relevant facts, including responsibility for the publication.
For the Bar, clearer communication of applicable standards could help new silks and their supporters understand expectations during an occasion that naturally attracts public congratulations.
The story remains one of professional clarification and regulatory interpretation.
