Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Congratulates the 68 Newly Conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria

I warmly congratulate the 68 distinguished legal practitioners conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

This is a proud moment for you, your families and the Nigerian legal profession. Behind the honour are years of preparation, demanding briefs, rigorous scholarship and the discipline of returning to the work, even when recognition seemed distant. Today, those efforts have found a fitting reward.

To each of you, I say: savour this achievement. You have earned the right to celebrate. Remember, too, those who helped make this day possible. The families who shared the sacrifices, the mentors who offered guidance, and the colleagues whose support strengthened your journey. This honour carries something of their contribution as well.

The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria commands respect because of the standards it represents. Its enduring value rests in the learning, integrity and judgment that its holders bring to the profession. The privilege of wearing the silk therefore comes with a greater obligation to uphold those standards, in court, in chambers and in public life.

May your elevation be felt most deeply in the quality of your advocacy, the fairness of your dealings and the opportunities you create for others.

Our profession needs senior advocates who will defend the independence of the judiciary, insist on respect for the rule of law and bring courage and sound judgment to difficult questions. We need leaders whose conduct strengthens public confidence in justice and whose success gives younger lawyers reason to believe that excellence remains worth pursuing.

I particularly encourage you to make mentorship a deliberate part of this new chapter. Open your chambers to talent. Teach the discipline behind a well-prepared case. Give younger colleagues meaningful opportunities to learn and grow. Insist on ethical practice and fair remuneration for professional work. The strength of the Bar tomorrow will depend, in considerable measure, on what we invest in its younger members today.

As fellow members of the Inner Bar, let us continue to demonstrate that professional distinction and service belong together. Let our experience improve the administration of justice, our influence protect the dignity of the profession, and our example make the path clearer for those coming behind us.

To our 68 new Senior Advocates, welcome to the Inner Bar. May you wear the silk with humility, practise with conviction and serve with honour. May this achievement open a chapter of even greater fulfilment and contribution.

Congratulations on this well-deserved distinction. May the years ahead bring achievements worthy of the honour you celebrate today.

Emeka Obegolu, SAN
