68 Lawyers Join Inner Bar as Supreme Court Opens New Legal Year

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is this morning holding the formal conferment ceremony for 68 newly elevated Senior Advocates of Nigeria, marking one of the most significant annual events in the Nigerian legal profession.

The ceremony is scheduled for the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja as part of activities marking the opening of the Court’s new legal year.

The 68 successful applicants comprise 67 advocates and one academic, following their approval by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 174th plenary session in July.

The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria remains the highest professional distinction conferred on legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional competence in advocacy or distinguished contribution to legal scholarship.

But the elevation comes with an expectation that goes beyond professional recognition.

On the eve of today’s ceremony, Chief Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, SAN, urged the incoming silks to treat the rank not as a symbol of superiority but as a responsibility to defend judicial independence, mentor younger lawyers, promote access to justice and resist the misuse of legal procedure.

He challenged the new SANs to undertake deserving pro bono work and to ensure that professional eminence does not distance the Inner Bar from ordinary citizens.

That message is particularly relevant at a time when the legal profession is confronting questions around public confidence in the courts, delay in litigation, professional ethics and affordability of legal representation.

The ceremony also gives the Supreme Court an opportunity to speak formally about the state of the judiciary and the priorities for the new legal year.

For younger lawyers, the event remains one of the profession’s most visible reminders of what sustained advocacy, scholarship and professional reputation can produce.

But for the 68 lawyers receiving silk, today marks the beginning of a different standard.

The honour recognises achievement already attained.

What follows will determine what the rank ultimately means.
