The Women Lawyers’ Committee and Young Lawyers’ Committee of the International Bar Association are today examining mentorship and succession at the Copenhagen Annual Conference.
The session, “Mentorship and Legacy: Building the Next Generation of Leaders,” focuses on mentoring, sponsorship and allyship as tools for sustaining progress for women in the legal profession.
The discussion recognises that representation at senior levels cannot be preserved merely by celebrating individual success stories.
Younger practitioners need access to experienced lawyers who can provide professional guidance, opportunities and networks.
The distinction between mentorship and sponsorship is particularly important.
A mentor may provide advice; a sponsor can actively advocate for a younger lawyer when opportunities arise.
For the Nigerian Bar, the theme has practical relevance at a time when young lawyers continue to raise questions about training, career progression and access to senior professional networks. IBA
