The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 38-year-old South African national, Jessica Will, to 25 years’ imprisonment for importing 5.75 kilogrammes of heroin into Nigeria.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu handed down the sentence after the defendant pleaded guilty to two drug-related charges brought against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
Will was arrested on July 6, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after NDLEA operatives reportedly discovered 14 blocks of heroin concealed in her luggage.
According to the prosecution, laboratory analysis subsequently confirmed that the seized substance was heroin with a total weight of 5.75 kilogrammes.
Following her guilty plea, the court convicted her on both counts.
Justice Egwuatu sentenced Will to 15 years’ imprisonment on the first count and 25 years on the second count. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently, meaning she will serve an effective custodial term of 25 years.
The conviction represents another significant outcome in the NDLEA’s continuing efforts against international narcotics trafficking through Nigeria’s airports.
Nigeria’s major international airports remain important enforcement points because of their use by trafficking networks seeking to move narcotics across national borders.
The case also demonstrates the serious criminal consequences attached to the unlawful importation of prohibited narcotic substances under Nigerian law.
Unlike drug cases where suspects remain under investigation or are awaiting trial, Will’s case has proceeded to conviction following her admission of guilt before the Federal High Court.
Her conviction adds to a series of recent NDLEA prosecutions involving foreign nationals and cross-border drug trafficking.
Beyond the quantity of heroin involved, the case highlights the transnational character of modern narcotics offences and the importance of cooperation between airport security agencies, narcotics investigators and the criminal justice system.
