Fresh arguments have emerged challenging the recent publication by Egbe Amofin O’odua on the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Elections, with critics accusing the association of presenting a selective and incomplete account of the 2018 NBA Elections.
The position contends that it is ironic for Egbe Amofin to describe the 2018 elections as possibly the worst in the Association’s history when its Chairman, Aare Isiaka Olagunju, SAN, served as the General Secretary of the NBA National Executive that conducted the election.
It argues that if such a characterization is true, it amounts to a self-indictment of the very Executive under which Aare Olagunju served.
Consequently, it maintains that neither the Learned Silk nor Egbe Amofin should be in a position to lecture others on the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections.
The claims also challenge what is described as Egbe Amofin’s selective presentation of the facts. While the association acknowledged that the 2018 elections were contested in court, it allegedly failed to mention that the court dismissed the challenge, with the allegations held to be unproven, unmeritorious, and untenable.
It further notes that no individual has ever been convicted of any fraudulent activity arising from the 2018 NBA Elections, stressing that full disclosure should remain the hallmark of members of the legal profession.
It is further argued that it is unfair and uncharitable for Aare Isiaka Olagunju, SAN, and Egbe Amofin, or anyone else, to suggest that the entire NBA National Executive presided over a fraudulent election.
The position maintains that the Executive comprised several officers beyond the office of the General Secretary and that allegations of electoral misconduct should be supported by specific facts rather than broad insinuations.
The counter-argument concludes that if Aare Isiaka Olagunju, SAN, as the then General Secretary, possesses any credible information regarding fraudulent activities connected with the 2018 NBA Elections, he should publicly disclose those facts instead of making assertions capable of maligning the entire NBA National Executive.
