A kidnapped man has regained his freedom after a joint security operation in Edo State, during which police say three suspected kidnappers were killed in a gun battle and several weapons recovered.

The operation took place in the early hours of Sunday, 11 October 2026, in a forested area of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

According to Premium Times, the rescued victim, Michael Akano, had been abducted on 9 October.

Security Operatives Storm Forest Hideout

The Edo State Police Command said intelligence gathering and technical support helped security personnel identify the location where the victim was been held.

The police confirmed that Akano was rescued without physical injuries and subsequently taken to a hospital for medical examination.

The successful rescue followed approximately two days in captivity.

Security operatives also reported recovering three locally fabricated single-barrel shotguns, eight live cartridges, five expended cartridges, two cutlasses and five mobile phones.

The bodies of the three deceased suspects were reportedly taken to the General Hospital mortuary in Igarra for autopsy.

Search Continues for Fleeing Suspects

The police said further operations were underway to locate and apprehend other suspected gang members who escaped during the confrontation.

Edo State Commissioner of Police Patrick Daaor commended the participating security agencies and local collaborators for their coordinated response.

He also encouraged residents to provide credible information capable of assisting investigations.

Kidnapping and Community Intelligence

The operation demonstrates the potential importance of cooperation between formal security agencies and local communities.

Information from residents can assist security personnel in identifying suspicious movements, locating victims and disrupting criminal operations.

Nevertheless, allegations against suspected offenders must be properly investigated, and the circumstances of deaths during security operations remain subject to appropriate scrutiny.

The Edo incident highlights both the continuing threat of kidnapping and the importance of prompt, coordinated intervention to protect victims.
