The Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger State has called for increased security at places of worship, particularly during Friday Jumu’at prayers and Sunday services.
According to Channels Television, the state CAN Chairman and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, made the appeal during his Sunday homily at St. Michael Catholic Cathedral, Kontagora.
Call Follows Borgu Mass Abduction
The appeal followed the abduction of worshippers and residents from communities in the Dekara District of Borgu Local Government Area on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Suspected terrorists reportedly attacked communities including Kpenya, Gidan-Zana, Sabon Gida and Masata shortly after Jumu’at prayers.
The exact number of people abducted had not been officially confirmed, although footage circulating after the attack appeared to show women, children and elderly residents being taken into a forest.
Bishop Seeks Permanent Deployment
Bishop Yohanna said Borgu and Agwara Local Government Areas required a strong and permanent security presence to protect rural communities and allow residents to live without fear.
He condemned attacks on religious centres, maintaining that violence against a mosque, church or any other place of worship threatens the sanctity and safety of the wider community.
The CAN chairman expressed solidarity with the affected Muslim communities and their families, while directing churches across Niger State to pray for the safe return of the abducted residents.
Security Agencies Intensify Rescue Efforts
The Nigeria Police Force has deployed tactical and counter-terrorism teams, the Special Intervention Squad and Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel to support the rescue operation.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, also visited the Niger State Police Command to assess the operation and provide additional support to personnel involved in the search.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed a coordinated military-led operation to rescue the victims, while the Niger State Government said security and emergency resources had been mobilised to the affected communities.
No Contact From Abductors
The Niger State Government said no communication had been received from the abductors as of its latest public update.
Commissioner for Information Obed Nuhu said authorities were also still working to establish the precise number of victims taken during the attacks.
The Northern Senators’ Forum has expressed concern over reports that the attackers planted landmines around parts of the affected area, although the claims had not been independently verified.
