Two people have been confirmed dead following a violent incident outside Filmhouse IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos State.
According to Naija News, citing Vanguard, the incident happened late on Friday, August 28, and continued into the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026. August 29 fell on a Saturday, contrary to reports describing it as Friday night.
Security Guard Allegedly Stabbed
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the yet-to-be-identified man attempted to enter the cinema but was prevented by security personnel.
The man allegedly became violent and attacked the guards with a machete and knife, fatally stabbing one security officer and injuring another.
Police said the suspected attacker was subsequently overpowered and mobbed by people at the scene. He died during the incident, bringing the confirmed death toll to two.
Incident Occurred Outside Cinema
Filmhouse Group confirmed that the disturbance occurred in the car park outside the cinema and was unrelated to its regular operations.
The company praised its security personnel for preventing the assailant from gaining access to the facility and announced additional security measures across its locations.
Police Reviewing CCTV Footage
The cinema’s Chief Security Officer has been taken into police custody to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The Command is also working to obtain and review closed-circuit television footage from the premises to determine the sequence of events and whether other individuals were involved.
The identities of the deceased persons had not been released, while the condition of the injured security officer remained undisclosed at the time of publication.
Police claims that the suspected attacker appeared homeless or may have been under the influence of drugs remain preliminary observations and have not been independently established.
