RE: “I CAN’T BE NEUTRAL; AFAM OSIGWE ADMITTED BIAS”

As the Chairman of the NBA Kaduna Branch, I attended the just concluded NBA NEC Meeting in Maiduguri virtually and followed the proceedings closely.

For the sake of clarity and proper record, my understanding of the remarks made by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, has been largely misrepresented in some quarters.

The President did not state that he would abandon neutrality or openly support any candidate in the forthcoming NBA 2026 elections.

Rather, his comments were to the effect that, as a human being, it may not be realistic to claim not to have personal preferences.

However, he was clear and emphatic that all aspirants must respect the rules governing the electoral process and refrain from acts capable of undermining the integrity of the NBA or the NEC meetings.

The President also expressed concern over the increasing level of campaign activities and spending associated with the forthcoming elections and admonished aspirants to conduct themselves within acceptable professional limits, warning that campaigning at NEC meetings would not be tolerated.

It is important that members avoid mischaracterising statements made at official meetings, as doing so only fuels unnecessary tension within the Bar.

The focus should remain on preserving the unity, integrity, and dignity of our Association.
